A Humanities Framework for Equitable Global Health
Public health, in both its local and global dimension, affects and is defined by many dimensions of our being human that are beyond the reach of science and medicine. What power dynamics are at play in public health? In what ways are current “unprecedented” public health issues actually unprecedented, and in what ways do they repropose old problems? What conceptions of health can meaningfully be considered ‘public’ or ‘global’, given the plurality of values and of approaches to health of different individuals and groups? What makes a group of individual a ‘public’ in this context, what makes them a community when we talk of ‘community health’ ? These are questions about the relationship between health and our systems of values, histories, and identities. As such, they need to be addressed from the different angles that the Humanities disciplines can provide.
